Umbrella Academy
Grace "Mom" Hargreeves
If you're read any of these posts on my galleries, this costume will follow a very familiar story: I got inspired, thought I could make the costume (relatively) quickly, the labour quickly spiraled out of control, and years later mayyybe it's done.
This costume had two time-consuming parts, and the first was the skirt. Because I wanted to emulate the look of neoprene (or something very similar) from the original skirt but on a budget, I ended up making a half-circle skirt out of twill with fake seams instead of pieced panels. I then stitched a pintuck along the seam lines to give that rounded look instead of the flat-looking seams that sewing usually strives for. To further push the illusion, I painted all the polka dots on with many only partially painted at the seam lines. I added some thin foam padding at the waistband for volume, and through some trial and error, put a small hoop made of plastic plumbing tube in the hem of the lining to give it even more volume. I first paired the outfit with a shirt from my closet and a (too) blonde wig, but eventually coloured the wig and sewed myself a more accurate blouse to complete the look, along with some pearls and a bracelet.
The second big project was the prop. I was inspired by a cool photo studio to recreate the scene where she is cross stitching, which means I needed the cross stitch itself. I hadn't done any embroidery like this since I was a child, and it was fun to go back to. I finished the moon in less than 2 months, but as of this writing the shoot was delayed, so no photos yet.
