Pokémon

Sonia (Sword/Shield)

Picture
Like so many others, this cosplay started out as a joke/challenge - everyone seemed to love the new assistant/professor character in Sword and Shield when they came out, and I was teased about how quickly I could probably throw together a cosplay. It's all stuff from my closet/stash except for the jacket, which I ended up thrifting. I wore the first version of the costume to DTAC (whatever they called the Toronto Christmas Market-Con that year) in 2019 with plans to improve a bunch of details and keep wearing her through 2020. But then there weren't any more cons, so even though some of the improvements were made I haven't worn her again since.

Milotic (gijinka)

PicturePokémon design and my concept illustration
While working on the Wooper swimsuit in 2016 (see further down the page), I was itching to make some water pokémon swimwear for myself! I love group cosplay, and enjoy this type of design work, so I decided to fit one into my cosplay plans for 2017 on the assumption that water-type pokémon party would happen for YetiCon once again. I picked Milotic for aesthetic reasons (and because I like using it in Pokémon Shuffle).

Sadly, the costume wasn't 100% finished in time for Yeticon but I wore it anyways with a wrong-but-still-coordinated pink bikini and partially-painted skirt. Luckily I managed to finish those missing parts in time for the local beach cosplay day later in the summer!

I couldn't find a bikini off the rack in ivory, so I bought one in the size and style I liked and then replicated the top in my own fabric. The bottoms are made using the same pattern that I designed for my "Hawkini" in 2015. The shrug is made out of silk/cotton voile, as is the wrap skirt/tail. The skirt fabric started out white, and I painted it all using "Liquid Colors" silk paint from G&S Dyes. The fan/tail fin is a Chinese Dance fan (bought online) painted the same as the skirt.

I tried to pick out sunglasses which resembled the shape of Milotic's eyes (but still in my budget), and while initially I used awful pipe-cleaner antennae, they've since been replaced with much sturdier Worbla versions. The wig was a cute AliExpress find, and the Dive Ball necklace was made by Yavarice.

Professor Burnet (Sun/Moon)

PictureProfessor Burnet design from Pokemon Sun and Moon games
Until Stark Reality gave me a copy of Pokémon Moon in early 2017, I hadn't been interested in the actual Pokémon games. I hadn't played one since Yellow came out in my adolescence. But I got totally sucked in. Stark had told me several times how much he wanted to cosplay Professor Kukui, so when I found Professor Burnet in my game, who was smart and cute and Kukui's wife... well, cosplaying her became inevitable.

It's a relatively low-budget costume - the whole outfit is made out of deconstructed/up-cycled clothing from the Ardene outlet store. No, really. The wig was the most expensive part, and also the most labour-intensive. I started with a Jareth Long from Arda Wigs Canada and pretty much just  doused it in Got 2 Be Glued Freezing Spray. It's going to be upgraded for each wear, since I have no idea what I'm doing with wig-styling.

Goldeen (gijinka)

Picture
Goldeen was planned as part of a massive "lazy Sunday" gijinka group for Anime North, but as these things go, it got made a few months too late. The whole thing turned out to be more labour-intensive than I had anticipated considering I decided to make the yukata (more or less) traditionally instead of using a costume pattern. Each piece of fabric had to be dyed the orange gradient (at which point I realized that I really should have just modified a pattern since the panel shape wasn't going to work with the dying), and trying to shape layers of voile and shiny organza and figure out a way to attach it to the obi was just a pain in the butt. Regardless, I'm happy with the result, even if I did accidentally ruin - err... change the dye job after washing the yukata and obi together.

The cotton candy is fake (made out of quilt batting which I dyed pink) and, in actuality, is probably extremely toxic.

Current status: sold.

More Pokémon... (hoodies)

Character hoodies are something that I love to design and make, and I started out with Pokémon. Shown here are Blastoise (collab. with shell made by Stark Reality), Dragonite, Dratini, and Turtwig. They're great for wearing at conventions when you don't want to go for a full costume. More hoodie designs are on my crafts and accessories page.

EVEN MORE POKÉMON...

In 2016 I made a Wooper-themed bathing suit for my friend Hikarimoro to wear at YetiCon (photos below).
During a pandemic Halloween, I put together a mask(?) for some quick spooky photos, based on the terrifying Froslass art by Tinchi93 (click for full image)
In 2024 Popfrocks talked a group of us into all putting together closet-cosplay type Team Rocket Grunt costumes. Arms did not have to be twisted hard LOL.  My particular outfit is made up of pieces from Pepper Potts, Plague Doctor, Sam Sparks (never completed), and a cap constructed out of a Dollarama bucket hat, because that's all they had. Glitter Rs provided by Popfrocks. We had a BLAST.
Worn to YetiCon 2024 and Con-G 2025.
Check us out being (intentional) uncoordinated fools at 5:25

Also in 2024 a bunch of my friends decided to get the Mobbunny Eeveeloutions costumes, dress them up with light-up tutus (and/or other accessories) and wear them to the YetiCon Glow Parade event. I went with Vaporeon, and made my skirt in an attempt to resemble a waterfall type effect with layers of sheer fabrics in different textures, ruffled hems, and of course, several sets of lights sewn in. I had a blast and will definitely keep Vaporeon on-hand for other events!
Worn to: YetiCon 2024, Anime North and YetiCon 2025
