Katamari Damacy
Mag
In 2011 some friends of mine organized a big Katamari cosplay group, and while I had all the materials I needed to make the cousin that I picked out, I didn't have time to finish the costume. But I did finally get around to having it done for Anime North in 2012! I joined forces with one of the girls who was part of the previous year's group and while I worked on my costume, they put together 3 more cousins for the rest of the family AND made a huge (~5 ft) katamari ball! Our masquerade entry can be watched below...
As for construction, the head is a builders' tube with the angles built up on top with cardboard and foamcore sheets. The face panel is removable and is made of two layers of voile layered over mini mesh fabric. There are hinged craft foam panels inside my mittens to give me square hands, and more foam in the form of plumbing pipe insulation used for the hoop around my tunic. All of the yellow detailing is machine appliqued onto the teal fabric, and has a nice texture of small squares which helps with the whole "pixelated" look of Mag I think.
The antennas of the whole group are made out of thread cones and Christmas ornaments (all from the same source to help us coordinate).
Current status: permanently retired.

Katamari Coup D'Etat
Here's our group entry for the 2012 Anime North Masquerade... there were some hiccups, but I'm pretty happy with it overall. If you want to see more of the actual construction, I documented the whole thing in photos and video which culminated in the Building a Katamari Cousin video. Additional video from Anime North is in my convention vlog, Mag is featured in EleventhPhotograph's NYCC video, and I also make a very brief appearance in The Video Ninja's interview video from AN 2012 (around the 5:30 mark...) |
