Darkest Dungeon
Plague Doctor (backless mod)
I was first introduced to Darkest Dungeon though Dan's Twitch channel, where (of course) the characters got named after friends and I had a Plague Doctor named after me. Then in February of 2019 I needed a mask for a party so my "Slothplay" for the month was a plague doctor mask… which then evolved into this costume. I chose to recreate this skin instead of one of the default outfits because I wanted to use it to enter the Single Pattern Contest at Costume-Con, and this silhouette absolutely worked. Unfortunately it was more work than expected (story of my life) and I missed the deadline. Obviously, I did eventually get her finished though. In theory we were going to have a whole Darkest Dungeon cosplay crew, and Kurumasha made a Hellion, but because life is hard (and then the pandemic) I think in the end it's just the two of us.
The mask is made from craft foam and some dollar-store sunglasses. I used the pattern from Lost Wax which was such a big help and time-saver over trying to design it myself. The pauldron things are also craft foam with foam clay spikes. The dress and hood (and sleeves) were designed and made by me. I might do things differently if I were to do it again, but that design is also just a pin to translate to reality. Most of my accessories are store-bought and altered, though I did have fun making my dagger out of cereal boxes and metallic tape.
In the end, the costume turned out to be quite the statement piece to wear to cons after 2019. What great timing.
